Pastel de Carne (Brazilian Beef Pastry)

Crispy, blistered fried pastry stuffed with seasoned ground beef, a beloved Brazilian street food snack served piping hot.

Ingredients
- 500 g wheat flour
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1¾ dl water
- 400 g ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic, minced
- 2 tomato, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 l vegetable oil, for frying
- black pepper to taste
- salt to taste

Method

Make and rest the dough — Mix the flour, oil, salt, and water into a smooth dough. Knead briefly, then rest covered for 20 minutes.

Brown the beef filling — Meanwhile, sauté the onion, garlic, and bell pepper until soft, then add the ground beef and cook until browned.

Thicken the filling — Stir in the tomato, tomato paste, and paprika, and cook for a few minutes until the filling thickens. Season and let cool.

Fill and seal the pastries — Roll the dough thin, cut into rectangles, spoon filling onto half of each, fold over, and seal the edges firmly.

Fry until golden — Deep-fry in hot oil for 3-4 minutes per side until golden and blistered. Drain and serve hot.
