Swedish Meatballs

Tender beef-and-pork meatballs in a silky, creamy gravy with a whisper of nutmeg. Cosy comfort food straight from Sweden.

Ingredients
- 400 g ground beef
- 200 g ground pork
- 1 onion, finely grated
- 60 g breadcrumbs
- 1 dl milk
- 1 egg
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- ¼ tsp ground allspice
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp wheat flour
- 4 dl beef stock
- 1½ dl heavy cream
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste

Method

Mix the meatball mixture — Soak the breadcrumbs in the milk for 5 minutes. Mix with the beef, pork, grated onion, egg, nutmeg, and allspice, then season.

Brown the meatballs — Roll into small walnut-sized balls. Melt the butter in a large pan and brown the meatballs all over for about 10 minutes, then set aside.

Make the cream gravy — Stir the flour into the pan drippings and cook for 1 minute. Whisk in the beef stock and cream, then the mustard, and simmer until thickened, about 8 minutes.
- 4.
Simmer meatballs in the sauce — Return the meatballs to the sauce and simmer gently for 5 minutes to heat through. Serve over mashed potatoes or noodles.
